Birds of Paradise / Pájaros de Paraíso

The transformable, wearable sculptures mimic the male courtship dances of birds. Although in nature it is usually a male trait to be flamboyant in western, patriarchal cultures these displays are thoroughly feminized.
The Latinx context of the artist also highlights a queer decolonization. In Dominican Republic gay men are referred to as Pájaros, which translates to birds. Giving minorities animal names is a colonial strategy that dehumanizes these groups. The artist actively works towards reclaiming the Pájaro identification.
